To live in the developed world means leaving a carbon footprint. A carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide, or greenhouse gas you (or your company) produce. Greenhouse gases are the primary cause of global warming and its consequences. At present, roughly 10-15% of the world's population is living in a high-tech developed way, and the rest of the world's population would like to raise their living standards to match those. The resulting increase in our collective carbon footprint will become greater over time than the earth can cope with, causing a gradual decline in the quality of life as we know it. Therefore it is clear that we will all have to start to change the way that we develop, and reduce our dependence on carbon as the primary source of power. This is the first fundamental principle of environmental sustainability. Reducing your carbon footprint.
Consumer demand and the power of market driven business entities. The only type of organization that is capable of creating the innovation required to reduce the global carbon footprint, is business. As the problem becomes more sensitive, so the risks of not participating and making improvements in your carbon footprint will rise. Already there is strong evidence that over 70% of consumers would prefer to do business with a company or brand that is doing good. This sentiment will only increase and the actions it generates will only become more resolute as the options become available to the consumer. Don't land up having to run to catch up. Lead the charge! There is a great opportunity for businesses that are pro-active now to get ahead of the competition and gain valuable economic advantage by becoming leaders in carbon footprint reduction and sustainable value creation, and masters of finding socially sustainable alternatives to existing labor agreements.
The need to differentiate yourself from the blandness of low cost, outsourced production. Companies like GE are pro-actively innovating more sustainable solutions to power generation and carbon dioxide reduction because the resultant products make more business sense, they cost less to run, use fewer resources to do the same job, and leave less of a carbon footprint. They are solutions that are scalable in the developing world and are thus bringing these companies into contact with new opportunities and markets.
Developing a market 10x bigger than your present market. Companies such as GE are addressing real third world issues on a micro level with these new power generation solutions - think single wind generators, versus a costly nuclear power station! This is opening markets for them in places and with consumers that they never considered as customers before. Creative solutions on a different scale put the financing of such solutions into the hands of many more stakeholders from village elders to commercial companies, rather than only at a governmental level. The same thinking could open markets for you, even at the level of single use shampoo sachets instead of large western budget mass packaging. Unilever should know what this means for business in developing countries.
Green LLC's consulting services are designed to help you understand the issues, identify opportunities in the short- as well as long-term, and to brainstorm, create and implement new ideas for products and services that will improve your company's sustainability offer. Our sustainability tools create a new framework that will allow you to think creatively about your future. Which we believe is bright Green! |
